![]() This will allow you to then drag away from the grouping and move them all at once. Iron Marines’ tutorial leaves a little to be desired, so here’s a couple tips that I figured out while playing: To select multiple units to move them at the same time, double tap a grouping of units that are all standing near each other. Additionally, on a lot of the maps you come across there will be points that you can install towers on, and those towers can then be upgraded a lot like a tower defense game. They’ll then make their way to that location, stop, and fire at anything within range. ![]() To move units, you drag them in a way that feels a bit like playing Battleheart ($2.99). The whole game is controlled via a simple touch interface that works almost exactly as you’d expect it to. ![]() At times it even feels a little too on the nose when it comes to riffing directly from the Blizzard classic, but with a unique art style and a fascinating blend between tower defense and real time strategy mechanics, Iron Marines manages to feel distinctly different even if it is giving a unbelievably massive hat tip towards the StarCraft universe. At its simplest, the easiest way to describe Iron Marines is that it’s pretty dang close to a mobile version of StarCraft. It’s from the developers of the Kingdom Rush (Free) series, so it’s not much of a surprise that they’d know how to make a really great mobile game. Rangers and Snipers can destroy an enemy tower, but Engineers are more equipped for the task, and are a lot faster at completing the job.I just got finished playing around an hour or so of Ironhide’s Iron Marines ($2.99), and it’d be hard for my first impressions of the game to be any better. You will need to take out your enemies using your Rangers or Snipers, but then transform them into Engineers once you punch through the defenses. So lets say you want to take down an enemy tower but it is guarded by several mutants. This comes in handy as you will need to quickly learn how each soldier benefits you in battle and switch between them as they're needed. You spawn your troops by collecting Etherwatts and can switch between the 3 types of soldiers for each class on the fly. For example, the Mecha Squad has a Brawler, Shellstorm and Flamewalker for you to choose from. Each class also has 3 different types of soldiers with different abilities. You command 3 different class of troops each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Iron Marines features the same cartoonish art style, humor, pop culture references and basic gameplay mechanics as Kingdom Rush. In one mission you may have to topple an enemy tower, and in the next you may need to hold a strategic position for a certain amount of time. ![]() What makes Iron Marines unique is the different objectives of each mission. You still have to defend bases, but instead of remaining still while waves of enemies come after you - you go after your enemies. It also spices up the static format of classic TD games by allowing you to move your main troops from place to place. Iron Marines takes place on different alien planets instead of the medieval world of Kingdom Rush. While a decent title that I highly recommend, Kingdom Rush still stands as one of the best tower defense games ever created. The same goes for Ironhide's new sci-fi title Iron Marines. This doesn't mean that the sequel Kingdom Rush Frontiers and prequel Kingdom Rush Origins aren't great, they just never had a chance. Developer Ironhide Games set the bar so high with the tower defense game Kingdom Rush that they have never been able to top it.
